We begin our journey in Lake Como. Nestled along the serene shores of Lake Como, Villa Balbianello stands as a testament to timeless elegance and natural beauty. On our journey southward we stop in Milan for a visit of this vibrant Italian metropolis. Milan is renowned for its fashion-forward identity, featuring landmarks like the iconic Duomo cathedral and the stylish Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This city seamlessly merges historical charm with modern allure, seen in its sleek skyscrapers and chic boutiques. From art museums to trendy neighborhoods, Milan invites travelers to discover its cultural richness, indulge in delicious cuisine, and experience the lively spirit of Italy’s fashion capital.
Our travels take us from Milan to Portofino, enjoying the scenic drive through picturesque landscapes. In Portofino, explore the harbor with its boats and shops, then enjoy a seaside lunch and stroll. Continue the journey along the coast to La Spezia, a gateway to Cinque Terre. Experience the diverse landscapes as you approach La Spezia, and get ready to discover the charm of these coastal villages. This journey connects two distinct places, revealing the beauty of Italy’s terrain.
Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the Italian Riviera, comprises five colorful coastal villages—Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—each nestled against the rugged cliffs of the Ligurian coastline. Connected by scenic hiking trails and a picturesque coastal train, Cinque Terre offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. The villages are renowned for their vibrant pastel-colored houses, charming harbors, and terraced vineyards, creating a stunning mosaic of natural and man-made beauty. Via short train journeys we arrive at the villages throughout the day. You’ll enjoy guide tours of the villages and time to stroll and take in the wonderful culture.
Traveling from La Spezia to Pisa and then to Tuscany unveils a seamless transition from coastal charm to historical wonders. Pisa is known for its iconic Leaning Tower. Explore the Piazza dei Miracoli and its architectural marvels before continuing to the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany.

Beginning our journey South to Sorrento we stop along the way in Orvieto. Perched atop a volcanic plateau in Umbria, Orvieto is a captivating hilltop town known for its stunning medieval architecture and panoramic views of the Italian countryside. Continuing on to Sorrento in the South get ready for stunning scenic coastlines and beautiful islands. We’ll explore the Amalfi village, Positano, and the Island of Capri.
Sorrento, perched on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples, exudes charm with its winding streets, citrus groves, and panoramic views. Known for its limoncello and vibrant atmosphere, Sorrento provides a delightful introduction to the Amalfi Coast. Our excursions bring us to Amalfi, a picturesque coastal town, enchants with its pastel-colored buildings cascading down the cliffside, historical cathedrals, and a lively waterfront. Positano, famous for its steep, narrow streets adorned with boutiques and cafes, is a postcard-perfect destination with its pebble beaches and vibrant bougainvillea. Capri, a gem in the Tyrrhenian Sea, captivates visitors with its Blue Grotto, upscale boutiques, and stunning vistas, making it a playground for those seeking beauty and luxury in equal measure.
Onward we visit Pompeii, frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, is a captivating archaeological site that provides a poignant glimpse into ancient Roman life. The remarkably preserved city reveals intricate details of daily existence, from well-preserved homes and vibrant frescoes to public spaces like the Forum and amphitheater. Exploring Pompeii offers a haunting yet immersive experience, allowing visitors to step into the past and witness the resilience of a city forever etched in history.
We arrive in Rome, the eternal city, beckons with an unparalleled blend of ancient grandeur and modern vitality. Steeped in a rich tapestry of history, its iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Pantheon stand as testament to centuries of civilization. The Vatican City, a sovereign state within its borders, boasts architectural masterpieces and artistic treasures, including Michelangelo’s masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel. Yet, Rome is not merely a museum under the open sky; it’s a living, breathing city where charming cobblestone streets, lively piazzas, and the aroma of authentic Italian cuisine create an enchanting atmosphere. I immensely enjoyed this amazing tour of Italy with Aperture Journeys group and Michael Corcoran as our tour leader/guide. All of our group, some of us meeting for the first time, interacted well together.
The tour was fast paced and well thought out to see so much of Italy’s history, culture, architecture and breathtaking beauty!
There were some of the towns & villages that I would have enjoyed more down time to explore and see at a slower pace.
Overall, it was an excellent tour.
I enjoyed each day of our tour with out missing an activity. Every day was well planned with delicious meals and rest breaks. I like having a local guide, to share the history at each site, time to explore on our own, shop and visit with our tour buddies. There are so many great memories it is difficult to pick the Best! Mike plans a tour where you get to do the Fun stuff and not worry about the details which make it happen. This is my 3rd tour with Aperture Journeys and not the last. Thank you for all the hard work you put into making it Fun for us.
